Main faith groups:

 

  • The country’s population is divided 50-50 between Christians and Muslims with the major Northern tribe (Hausa and Fulani) being Muslims and the Southern (Yoruba and Igbo) practising Christianity.

  • Sunni Muslims are the majority. Christians have several denominations – Catholics, Anglican, Baptist and lately the liberal Pentecostal is becoming popular in the urban areas.

In most communities, the traditional leaders couple up as religious leaders

Social and Behaviour Change Expected:

  • Improved engagement of men in caregiving and in early childhood stimulation

  • Improved engagement of families in refugee camps in joint planning, designing and monitoring the proposed interventions and reduced tension & conflict among ethnic groups in camps

  • Handwashing practiced at critical times and reduced open defecation by persons attending the 5 annual mass pilgrimages 

  • Other outcomes are being considered/refined to include Basic Education, Child Protection etc
